Hi-Fructose Article with Eric Fortune:
by Kevin Mayes

The current issue of Hi-Fructose Magazine features one of Eric Fortune's works on the cover and has a very intriguing interview with Eric inside. It is a good read! I found the comments to be honest and sincere and a bit amusing as well. The accompanying work is what you would expect....extremely good. If you haven't already, plan on getting this issue.

Delays in new posts...
by Kevin Mayes

I haven't been able to post anything the past week or so and probably won't have much over the next week either due to some renovations and repairs to the home and studio!

My wife and I own a victorian home and it is in dire need of a good cleaning and some repair. My studio is in my home and it needs work as well. So, as a result I am not getting a lot of work done in the studio as far as my art is concerned!

I hope to be back in force soon so please check back for updates and new posts!

Video's to Explore...
by Kevin Mayes

Yesterday, Dan Dos Santos posted a link on the Muddy Colors blog to a lecture by Terryl Whitlatch on the Academy of Art University website and it was very interesting and informative. After exploring the various other video's there I thought it would be worth sharing.  I think you will find the resources there to be very helpful. Click here to visit the site.

If you haven't visited 'Muddy Colors' you may want to check it out. It's a very good blog with some very talented artist.

Sketching a Few Idea's...
by Kevin Mayes

These are a couple of thoughts on dragons that I want to develop into a finished piece at some point in the near future. Really like the view from above....that may just have to be the one I go with first. So, since this thumbnail has given me a look that I want it will now go to a more finished drawing. I will post that when it is completed, but I need to complete a project that is currently on the board first.

This is the thumbnail of a landscape that I have used in a previous painting, 'The Empress', as a part of that painting. I like the way it turned out on that project and think that it will work well as a painting on its own.

I had an art teacher years ago tell me that no matter what an artist does their painting will never be better than their drawing. Sometimes that is hard to keep in mind as we soar through our daily work, but it is very true and should be a part of our routines to draw each day! Even if it is only to do some quick thumbnails... draw. This is something that I have neglected for too long and am striving to do more.

The Empress..
by Kevin Mayes

The Empress is another of the images I have been working on for a possible tarot set. Although I like this piece in watercolor, I may do it in a different medium. What do you think?

Snowscape
by Kevin Mayes

Finally got an opportunity to try digital painting. This was the first try at it so I thought that a snow scape would be appropriate since there was a lot of snow for reference! At any rate it was a good learning experience and a lot of fun.

Project sketch...
by Kevin Mayes

This is for a series of Tarot Cards I have been working on off and on for a while now. This will probably be the queen of cups or one of the major arcana cards. The background will come, but it needs to reflect which character this is to be.

Boudicca....

My thought was to do a historical image and I chose Boudicca as the subject since I really liked the story behind her rage upon the Romans and she is Celtic. The scene is when the Romans come to take her land and property after the death of her husband who was king of the clan. She was friends with the Romans, however that quickly changed when they stripped and beat her in front of the village. Her wrath came when the Romans raped her two daughters in front of her and the village! Here, I show her being confronted by the Romans and being quite confused and bewildered about what they are doing.

"Summoning at Dragon's Back"

'Summoning at Dragon's Back'  oil on paper  22 X 34

This is one of my more recent paintings. I have worked with airbrush for many years and it is a welcome change to work in another medium.
Me?...blogging!?
by Kevin Mayes

I have been reading and following a number of blogs the past few weeks (such as Eric Fortune's, James Gurney's and Muddy Colors) and have decided that it was time for me to have one of my own, since that is what I have been pondering for some time now, and here I am blogging for the first time.  I shall try not to bore you to distraction!
